Homework:

• We will not have homework during the week of Thanksgiving, unless you have make-up work for being absent.

• Please plan ahead for Week 10 homework. It will go home on Monday, November 28th and the Spelling test will be that Friday, December 2nd.

• Thank you for joining me at conferences to talk about your wonderful children! It was great to touch base with everyone!

• Thanksgiving Brunch: We will have a “Friendsgiving” breakfast on Wednesday, November 23rd. Please look for the Google Doc from our room parents (Jen Fisher and Katie Regelin) for sign-ups. Thanks for donating!!

• Scholastic Book Orders: A new book order went home this week. It is due by November 23rd.

• Christmas Program Colors: Please plan on having your child in these colors for the night of the Christmas program. Thank you!

Highlights from our Week:

• Math: Both the 3rd and 4th graders began their new units, which actually parallel each other well! The students can really see how their curriculums build on each other. They are both working on place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction. The 4th graders are just taking it to a higher level.

• Religion: We continued reading about the Saints. We read about Saint Benedict Joseph who was a wanderer in life. We learned from him that we must “wander” towards God. We had a great meditation on how we see ourselves with God. Where are we? What are we saying? What are we doing? How is God our friend?

We also read about St. Bernadette. Ask your child what incredible miracle happened to her!

• Reading: We continued our Lit Circle reading and book clubs. The 3rd graders had a great conversation about the purpose of the book, “Hundred Dresses.” They realized the lessons and morals of the story. Ask your child what the lessons are. The 4th graders did not want to put down the “Island of the Blue Dolphins” when they read it this week!

For comprehension, we continued our learning of inferencing in a new way. We looked at the poem, “The Moon,” read it, and then went back to discuss and annotate it as a class. We had a great discussion about this poem and were able to truly understand its meaning. We also looked at a second poem, “Secrets,” and annotated our thinking of it as well.

• Grammar: We wrapped up our units in grammar this week. The children reviewed for and took a quiz. The 3rd graders took a quiz on nouns, and the 4th graders took a quiz on pronouns.

• Writing: The children began writing their final stories of the trimester. They are writing Thanksgiving stories of course! We learned what a climax of the story is so they can attempt putting one into their stories. They also learned that by adding “juicy words,” their stories are more interesting.

• Science: We studied our fossils we made and took them home. We also began learning about topographic maps. The students are excited to create their own next week!

• Social Studies: We learned about wind power and dam power in Washington State. We also began wrapping up our unit of the regions by creating a travel brochure of our favorite region.

• Technology: We are learning to type with a program called “Typing Club.” The children learned the “Home Row” this week. We also used the Chromebooks to research our regions for the travel brochures.
