EWU Supplemental Literacy

SCROLL

We provide a supplemental literacy program for children in kindergarten through second grade in partnership with Eastern Washington University. This program involves an annual literacy screening (beginning- and end-year). The screening provides information to your child’s teacher to monitor growth in key literacy areas. If your child scores below grade-level benchmarks on the screening, EWU graduate students work collaboratively with your child’s teacher to provide additional focus in certain areas, such as oral reading and comprehension, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and writing. These literacy sessions last approximately 30 minutes once a week throughout the school year.

Additionally, students from EWU conduct interactive literacy centers in our kindergarten classroom focused on narrative skills, writing, vocabulary and phonological awareness.

This is the 13th year of our literacy partnership between St. Al’s and EWU.
